Poi day is a place where our community gathers to continue this important cultural practice of making poi, to socialize with one another, and share ‘ono food. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Every Thursday morning our community comes together to process cooked kalo into poi.<\/p>\n

Poi Day was started about 30 years ago by the Hawaiian families along Kauai\u2019s north shore as a food justice project, to keep poi available and affordable.<\/p>\n

Today, we distribute an average of 800 pounds of poi weekly to k\u016bpuna and \u2018ohana throughout the island, at cost.<\/p>\n

We are not currently accepting new volunteers at poi day. We’ve changed poi day operations in order to keep our community safe and abide by food handling requirements.<\/p>\n

Poi making starts at 6am and is usually done by noon with lunch to follow.
Working from 6am is not required, but the earlier you arrive, the more respect you will earn from Waipa kupuna!<\/p>\n

We recommend arriving any time between 6-8am. After 8am, staff are not as available to assist beginners.
Please call 826.9969 to RSVP, it helps us to get a headcount in preparation for lunch.<\/p>\n

Note<\/em> that Poi Day is not a photo op, it is work.<\/p>\n

WHAT TO WEAR:<\/h2>\n

– Volunteers must have shirts and footwear.<\/p>\n

– Long hair must be tied back.<\/p>\n

– Wear casual clothes that can get sticky from kalo and maybe a bit wet.<\/p>\n

– We are working with food, so cleanliness is very important.<\/p>\n

– Please no perfume or lotions.<\/p>\n

– We are not working in the lo`i (kalo fields), so you will not get muddy.<\/p>\n
