Join us on an unforgettable learning journey through Waip\u0101, a lush 1,600 acre river valley on Kaua`i\u02bbs north shore.\u00a0 Waip\u0101 valley is a traditional Hawaiian land division known as an ahupua`a, which\u00a0i ka w\u0101 kahiko\u00a0(in ancient times) supported a sustainable and thriving community of potentially over a thousand people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many of the valuable features of the ancient irrigation and field systems and Halulu fishpond continue to exist today, having been restored and maintained by the Waip\u0101 Foundation over the last 30 years.\u00a0 The historic auwai, or irrigation canal, continues to bring water to a network of gardens, orchards and agroforestry plantings as it did in the time of our ancestors.\u00a0 Today, these farms and gardens provide increasing amounts of food for the local community and Waip\u0101\u02bbs educational programs.<\/p>\n

Walk and ride from the coastline at Hanalei bay to the cool uplands of Waip\u0101 stream exploring the ecosystems that support our food plants, native wildlife and the invasive species that challenge them.\u00a0 All while learning about the traditional values and practices which ensured the sustainability of our people and how we are adapting and applying them along with modern tools and technology.<\/p>\n

This experience will change the way you view Hawai`i\u02bbs natural landscapes and environment, knowing the cultural features and significance that lie within them.<\/p>\n

All farm and food tours will feature a different menu and tasting consistent with the topic of the day. We\u2019ll start with a morning snack and m\u0101maki tea upon check-in. Midway through the program, while we are out on site, partake in another light sampling. Finally, upon our return from touring, the morning will culminate with lunch and dessert. Our menu and tasting can accommodate vegan and vegetarian preferences, as well as food allergies.<\/p>\n

Daily menus will include a mix of modern and traditional dishes, and often traditional ingredients used in creative and novel preparations. Produce will be harvested fresh from Waip\u0101\u02bbs gardens and orchards and prepared each day by our team in Laukupu, our commercial kitchen. Other ingredients will be sourced locally as much as possible. Our three traditional starches, ulu (breadfruit), `uala (sweet potato) and kalo (taro) will be stars of the show.<\/p>\n

Gloves and tools will be provided to those who are participating in planting and harvesting. We will be riding in open air vehicles and may get a little wet at times. Be prepared to tour Waipa in rain or shine (big umbrellas will be provided).<\/p>\n

What to Bring<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

You must wear footwear that you are okay with getting dirty. Slippers are okay during the dry weather season. However during rainy seasons, it does get wet and muddy so closed-toed and preferably waterproof shoes are recommended.<\/p>\n

Waip\u0101 valley is an ahupua`a, an ancient land division, within which our people lived and thrived in sustainable communities in ka w\u0101 kahiko (pre-contact times).
